Foxy moods
FoxyLady seems a very changeable creature, far more like a cat in temperament than like the dogs I have known. She loves to play with KiwiMan in the yard, teasing and coquetting, laughing and biting (very softly) fingers which may be twiddled at her. She does _not_ chase balls, sticks, bits of bark off trees, or her tail. She does, however, do an occasional flip-over as she tries to wash her face in the damp grass.

She struts, dances, runs away and disappears into lilac shrubbery, stays out of sight for long periods of time. Yet she watches me, when I have brought her out, and any sudden noise will bring her running to 'safety', though she pretends it is only a chance visit and she'll be off again in a minute! When I pick up her leash to take her inside ~ leash keeps her from bolting through partially opened doors and disappearing from sight faster than a waterbug ~ she comes over all "Please don't eat/beat me, oh Ogre of the HouseRulesCommittee!" It vexes me summat, that does, yet she's only showing proper respect to the Alpha female in her small pack.

As I said in a previous post, I've a lot to learn about the workings of Wee Doggies.... It's rather fun when it's not utterly exasperating.

Hee. My neighbor's little dog does that cringing thing too...I think it's a little dog thing. :)

Well, consider the world from her point of view.

She's little,and therefore, a tasty snack!

It isn't just little dogs that do this, my Lu dog used to do this when she was young too, and it bothered the hell out of me. It made punishing her very hard. The only thing you can do is have patience. And never yell.

Good to hear FoxyLady is keeping you amused -- if sometimes frustrated & occasionally sad-and-rejectedish.

Oxer does the passive-aggressive rolling-over-submission sometimes too. What makes it frustrating is that it's not purely submission behaviour. It's also a subtle form of resistance: "You can't make me move, because I'm sooooo terrified and being sooo good and submissive!!!"

It's the equivalent of JB's sit-down strikes -- when we're having issues when we're out somewhere, he'll sit down & say "I'm having a time out!" which is actually a way of making me wait for him. (This isn't always the case -- sometimes it's a valid time-out, just like sometimes dogs' rolling-over is valid -- but sometimes it's definitely manipulative. ::le sigh::)

Dogs & kids ... Can't be entirely happy without 'em, can't be entirely happy with them ... (Which is nicer than saying "can't live with 'em, can't bury them in the garden ..." ;-)

Small dogs, in particular, do seem to be odd wee creatures -- but at least you won't get bored with your wee fox kit around! Actually, her behaviour reminds me somewhat of ferrety activities -- especially the disappearing-and-just-visiting bits. Hmmm ... Is it possible that she's an especially fluffy ferret in disguise?

Love you!!!

She sounds wonderful (and I'm very fond of foxes, being as how I'm one myself). I'm glad you have each other.
